This week, Senator Leahy and Senator Lee had an op-ed on the need for reform to counteract abuse of the patent system, and they explained that Congress is making progress on bipartisan, bicameral legislation. They said that the Senate Judiciary Committee is also coordinating with Rep. Goodlatte, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee. We’re looking forward to reading their legislative drafts once they’re released.
Patent Progress contributor David Balto also had an interesting op-ed this week on state-sponsored patent assertion entities and anticompetitive protectionism. Matt Levy had a post up with some myths about Intellectual VenturesThe largest patent aggregator, currently holding around 40,000 patents. Closely associated with co-founder Nathan Myhrvold. IV is often viewed as a patent assertion entity, although much of its activities are conducted through spinoffs, and the company is at least nominally in the business of producing inventions in-house. See our posts on Intellectual Ventures., and also posted a video from an event on Wednesday at which he and IV’s Russ Merbeth had some fun exchanges.
